Housed on the shores of Lake St. Clair in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, the Grosse Pointe War Memorial serves as a center for enrichment in honor of veterans. The building itself is the former home of the Russell Alger family – a mansion, built in 1910, and donated to the community in honor of World War II veterans in 1949.

Our community was incorporated in 1911 as a Village, with about 350 residents, and on April 1, 2009 was incorporated as a city “Village of Grosse Pointe Shores, A Michigan City”. It lies just north of the City of Detroit and is about one and a half square miles in size. The Shores is the smallest of the five Grosse Pointe communities and the only one to be zoned for single family dwellings only. It is still a small community, currently with approximately 1100 households, about 3000 residents. Grosse Pointe Shores is proud to be the home community of the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House, which is tax exempt, and the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, the Shores’ only commercial property.

The terms “Grosse Pointe” or “the Pointes” are ordinarily used to refer to the entire area, referencing all five individual communities, with a total population of about 46,000. The Grosse Pointes altogether are 10.4 square miles, bordered by Detroit on the south and west, Lake St. Clair on the east and south, Harper Woods on the west of some portions, and St. Clair Shores on the north. The cities are in eastern Wayne County. The Pointes begin six miles (10 km) northeast of downtown Detroit and extend several miles northeastward, in a narrow swath of land, to the edge of Wayne County.
